Four of the five victims were taken to local hospitals in serious-to-critical condition, said Larry Langford, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
The fifth victim, a 34-year-old man, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Mt. Sinai Hospital, authorities said.
One victim, a 15-year-old boy, was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper left thigh, police said. A 22-year-old man who was shot in one hand was taken to Mt. Sinai, while a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were taken to Stroger Hospital. Both had been shot in the back and the older of the two had been hit in both legs, police said.
The shooting happened as the five victims were standing outside near West 53rd and South Halsted Streets about 8:20 p.m. Police said the vehicle involved in the drive-by is described as a newer model, 4-door white Jeep Cherokee that left the scene westbound on 53rd.
The shooting appears to be gang related, although it is unknown if one or all of the victims were targeted, according to Chicago Police Public Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien. Two handguns were used.
No one was in custody. Wentworth Area detectives were investigating.
