In a lifetime filled with NFL draft experiences, the longest and most anxious wait for Bill Tobin came in 1983 when the Bears were without a pick from the fifth through seventh rounds. Richard Dent's name loomed as large as his 6-foot-5, 265-pound frame on a small yellow card attached to a wall covered with magnetic paint in a tiny draft room that had one table in the middle and was more suitable as a closet at the old Halas Hall. The Bears had traded away picks in those three rounds, and general manager Jim Finks, after selecting six players in the first four rounds, followed owner George Halas out the door to lunch.
