At Planned Property Management in Lakeview, the phone calls usually begin around mid-February and don’t stop for months.

"Right around Valentine's Day, it goes from dead quiet to all-out craziness," said Dan McDonough, Planned Property’s marketing director. "We receive several hundred calls per day."

McDonough said many of the calls are from Chicagoans and people outside the city trying to secure one of the company’s 3,800 units for May 1, which is the "unofficial kick-off to the rental season."
