Adam Silver is not messing around.
The NBA commissioner on Tuesday banned L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life from the league and will encourage the other owners to force Sterling to sell the team. Sterling also was fined $2.5 million.
As part of the ban, Sterling will not be allowed to set foot in team facilities or influence personnel decisions.
"The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful," Silver said.
Silver said the NBA had completed its investigation of Sterling's comments that surfaced over the weekend, in which the Clippers owner encouraged his then-girlfriend not to bring African-American people to games.
Silver added that the NBA did not take into account past alleged comments and misconduct in meting out its punishment, but only the evidence that came to its attention recently.
