Well thank you, Mr. President.
He just jinxed my bracket. I had Michigan State all set as the national champion. Oh, and I'm not a late arriver to this party, either. I've watched them all year, even when they were injured. I know what they're capable of!
Then they blow away the Big Ten in the conference tournament, and the next thing, everyone on ESPN picks them and then of course, the chief executive.
I'm tempted to change mine to Louisville but guess what? That's everyone else's second pick as well.
See? This is why I don't gamble.
Here's what I do know, and most of this is grudge-based. Florida over Kansas in the South Regional (I hate you Bill Self, for leaving Illinois). Sparty over Virginia in the East.
I like Arizona over Wisconsin out of the West, mostly because Wisconsin has a better team than anything we have here in Illinois. That doesn't seem right.
And the aforementioned Louisville out of the Midwest.
Here's a fun geographical fact: How many Illinois teams in the tournament? That's right, zero. The Land of Lincoln is not the Land of Hoops for reasons unknown. Heck, even our nearest "reach out" friends, the always dependable Southern Illinois Salukis, failed to make this year's Big Dance.
Again, the culprits: Illinois, Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Illinois State. You have all made me so very sad. Not a winner among you. I'm moving.
No, I'm staying. It's football season! Technically, it's the offseason but there is no offseason. I'm happy with the Bears so far but I'm having nightmares of a rejuvenated Julius Peppers playing for—wait for it—the Packers (shriek!).
This is so us. We break up with a player and he ends up hurting us twice a year. This script writes itself.
Here's another nightmare. Now that Phil Jackson has arrived to save the Knicks, I'll bet Carmelo Anthony stays instead of coming to the Bulls.
I'll confess. I had dreamed of him coming here. I was convinced.
From "dream" to "nightmare," just like that.
