"That would be the goal," Morel said from his Bakersfield, Calif., home
After visiting a back specialist last week in Southern California, Morel said he was placed on a program for four to five weeks. He said he could incorporate baseball work during the latter stages of the program if he makes progress.
"It's a program for my glutes and core area, essentially to take pressure off my back," Morel said.
Morel was batting .267 (8-for-30) during his rehab stint with the Knights. He is batting .177 in 113 at-bats with the Sox as the pain has harnessed his swing, especially on outside pitches.
Steady Stewart: Long reliever Zach Stewart is scheduled to make his first start of 2012 and his 12th career start Monday night against the Cubs, but he said the adjustment from long relief shouldn't be difficult.
"It's not too big a deal," said Stewart, who pitched a season-high three innings at Detroit on May 14. "I'm not saying it's going to be easy. But if it was my first start in the bigs, it would be a little more overwhelming."
Stewart allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings in his Sox debut Aug. 6 at Minnesota and threw a one-hit shutout against the Twins on Sept. 5.
Extra innings: The Sox are expected to announce the signing of first-round pick Courtney Hawkins before Monday night's game. Hawkins agreed to a $2.475 million signing bonus Wednesday. St. John's pitcher Kyle Hansen, a sixth-round pick, also is expected to sign. ... Outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (rib cage) will report Monday to Charlotte to start his rehab assignment. ... The Red Sox have had a scout at the Sox's last four games.
