Untangle this Webb, please

Please join me as we bow our heads. We are acknowledging the close of the J'Marcus Webb era in Chicago.

Painfully inadequate, he made up for it by being a doofus off the field as well. Can't play left tackle, can't hide him at right tackle, we're out of options. My favorite moment was when Jay Cutler bumped him a year ago. Two reactions: 1) Cutler is a jerk 2) Webb is truly awful. Whom do you hate more?

I'll let you decide, but I'd kill to be in the film room when coach Marc Trestman first saw film of him. "Um, you guys tried to make a starter out of this guy?"

Well, that's the way it's done here in Chicago. We haven't had great linemen in decades, and we're always trying to get lucky in the later rounds—like it's an afterthought. "Hey guys, it's the seventh round. What say we grab that tackle we've needed for decades?"

I'll bet the Bears open the regular season with Kyle Long and Jordan Mills as starters. And why not? It can't get worse. I say that as a joke, but I'm not laughing.

But even if that is fixed, there's this voice. It's only a whisper, but it's there. You hear it too. You don't want to believe it. You want to say everything so far has been the Bears' fault. He just needs to mature. He's had too many offensive systems. He hasn't had the coaching and hasn't had the receivers. Hasn't had … on and on.

And that voice? It just says "Cutler isn't the guy."

You pray it isn't true. You hope it isn't. But you know: It it's true, it's back to development hell. For decades.

I'll let that nightmare sit and gestate. I don't even know what gestate is.

I will say we need to end other eras here. Rick Hahn, can you end the Adam Dunn era, please? Great job of getting rid of Alex Rios and Jake Peavy. You figure Paulee Konerko retires. If we trade Dunn, we have virtually no payroll! Talk about options!

Because at $15 million per year, it feels like Dunn is being paid per strikeout.

    Doughnut panic

I'm not ashamed to admit that for the past several years, I have mapped my walk to work around which doughnut shop I'd like an excuse to stop at on the way. There's nothing like the thought of a crunchy, craggy old fashioned doughnut or the sweet, yeasty chew of a classic glazed doughnut to help...
