Being a sports fan and a sportswriter, I have never fully pledged allegiance to the Cubs or White Sox. But I must say I've always had a special place in my heart for Wrigley Field. Throughout its 99-year history, the Friendly Confines has managed to keep its old-school and nostalgic appeal over the years.
But with baseball modernizing at a rapid pace, the Cubs have finally decided to follow this trend. They are doing so with their proposed $500 million renovation plan.
One aspect of the project is a 5,000-square-foot Jumbotron that the Cubs want oh so badly. Now while I understand the need for modernization and finding ways to stream revenue, I can't bear the thought of a Jumbotron on the North Side.
I must say I enjoy the view from the Wrigley press box. The rooftops, the nearby buildings, the neighborhood and the lake are all within my field of view.
I know there are others who enjoy that view as well. I feel a Jumbotron would take some of that ambiance away. I also feel such a device would take away the ballpark's originality, which has made Wrigley one of the best ballparks in the country.
The eyesore of a Jumbotron would also serve as a harsh reminder of corporate America's constant presence in professional sports with the amount of advertisements certain to be plastered on it. Now don't get me wrong, there are plenty of ads covering Wrigley. But most are limited to the concourses and the stadium's exterior.
There are ads surrounding the field itself, but those are small and few in comparison to other ballparks in the league.
I am also concerned about the potential of the rooftop views being obstructed. The Wrigleyville rooftops are part of what make the Wrigley experience unique.
Although I'm resigned to Wrigley changing in the near future, it doesn't mean I have to like it.
