Rating the Cubs and Sox's moves

Maybe it's because they were sick of being overshadowed by the Blackhawks' big moves. Or maybe they're serious about retooling. Whatever the case, the Cubs and Sox were awfully busy Tuesday. So were these moves a single, double, triple or home run?

Cubs trade Scott Feldman, Steve Clevenger

What they get: Pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop, and two international signing bonus slots, all from Baltimore.

Rating: Double

A big part of this move is collecting "international bonus pool money" to sign players. Bottom line: That's a good thing, and Feldman and Clevenger weren't doing much anyway.

Cubs trade Carlos Marmol

What they get: Relief pitcher Matt Guerrier, from the L.A. Dodgers.

Rating: Home run

We're not totally shocked the Cubs got SOMETHING for Marmol. He did have 38 saves in 2010 and 34 in 2011. But all that matters now is he's someone else's headache.

Sox sign Micker Zapata

What they get: Zapata is a 16-year-old, 6-foot-3, 225-pound outfielder from the Dominican Republic. We repeat: He's 16, and he's huge!

Rating: Triple

For the $1.6 million signing bonus the Sox gave this kid, it's low-risk, high-reward. The main drawback? They might have to wait half a decade to find out if he can play in the majors.

Cubs trade Ronald Torreyes

What they get: Two international signing bonus slots from Houston.

Rating: Single

So long, Ronald. We understand you are an infielder, but that's about all we know. As with the Baltimore deal, it's all about the international bonus pool money right now. You understand.

Sox hire Jim Thome

What they get: Thome will serve as a special assistant to the general manager.

Rating: Home run

This move is tremendous for the PR value alone. Even just putting him on the Jumbotron and having him wave will get fans at the Cell going, kinda like the Hawks do with Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita.
