Wrigley launches fan logo contest

Wrigley Field turns 100 years young next season, and all the old gal wants is a one-of-a-kind gift from a fan to mark the occasion.

Preferably one that looks good with pinstripes.

"Something that encapsulates the 100 years of the ballpark, that's what we're looking for," said Alison Miller, the team's senior director of marketing.

The Cubs are asking fans to design logo that will be used to commemorate Wrigley Field's 100th anniversary. Through Feb. 28, fans can visit the team's website and submit their creations.

"We wanted to engage our fans in designing the logo and make them feel like they're as much a part of the celebration as we are as a team," Miller said. "There will be a gallery feature so you can see what other people posted. We will be able to filter all those and see them. We have a team that is planning all the 100th activities and we will vet down the top three to five finalists."

About those pinstripes—in addition to being used on all marketing materials surrounding the 100th anniversary, the winning design could become even more visible by earning some prime real estate on the team’s home jerseys.

"We're working with MLB right now," Miller said. "It will likely be a patch of some sort that will be on the uniforms. Thinking about how that looks with our classic home whites, it will be part of the overall decision."

A group of Cubs employees will narrow the submissions to the finalists. Once that's completed, fans can visit the team’s website and vote for their favorite, with the winner being announced at an unspecified home game later this summer.

Miller said the winner will receive a personalized 2014 jersey along with tickets to the game at which the logo is unveiled.

"It's the cache of being chosen the winner," she said. "Obviously this is a historic piece of art history for the organization so a chance to be a part of the winning design is a big prize."

Of course, Wrigley Field’s illustrious history includes more than just the Cubs.

Over the years, the stadium has played host to the Bears, the Chicago Sting (soccer), ski jumping in the mid-'40s and numerous concerts.

"I'm curious to see how fans creatively interpret that," Miller said. "That’s why we're opening it up to the fans. We want to see how our fans bring the history and the memories that they have at Wrigley to life as a logo."
