Sighting: Michael Phelps hits the town during Ryder Cup week

You didn’t really expect Michael Phelps to stay in during his week in the Chicago area for the Ryder Cup, did you?

Besides taping the Golf Channel’s “Feherty Live” September 24 with Michael Jordan and and taking part in the Ryder Cup celebrity scramble September 25, Phelps joined fellow swimmer Conor Dwyer for dinner September 26 at Joe’s Stone Crab. Afterward, they met up with Bulls legend Scottie Pippen, who also took part in the celebrity scramble, and his wife Larsa Pippen, at Paris Club’s upstairs lounge, Studio Paris. Phelps hung out Thursday at Bull & Bear. On Friday, he dined at Roka Akor and hung out at Mercer 113 and Social 25.

Dwyer stopped by Dragon Ranch Friday for drinks and let me hold his heavier-than-expected gold medal. (Yes, he still carries it with him. Wouldn’t you?).

I saw former football and baseball star Bo Jackson at the grand opening party for Nike Chicago (formerly Niketown) Thursday night. “It’s past my bedtime,” said Jackson, who turns 50 in November. “I’m usually in bed watching a Lifetime movie.”

The Bears’ Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall had dinner September 25 at Joe’s Stone Crab. Their head coach, Lovie Smith, dined at Joe’s Stone Crab Sept. 22, as he usually does the day before home games.

The Bears’ Nick Roach was a celebrity judge at Friday’s Hamburger Hop (part of the Chicago Gourmet festivities) at Harris Theater. “(He was) rocking a Milwaukee Brewers hat of all things,” said my Tribune colleague Phil Vettel. “But the guy couldn’t have been more charming, chatting with starstruck fans and sportingly posing for pictures with all…”

Derrick Rose and his Bulls teammates and coaches had a team dinner in a meeting room at the Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel in Northbrook Sunday.

The Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane dined Saturday at Bella Notte Ristorante in West Town and teammate Jonathan Toews dined September 23 at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse in the Gold Coast.. His coach Joel Quenneville and Fox baseball announcer Tim McCarver dined separately at Joe’s Stone Crab that night. The Blackhawks’ Daniel Carcillo had lunch at Japonais September 26 for the second time in as many weeks. Former Blackhawk Chris Chelios dined September 22 at Abruzzo's Italian Restaurant in Melrose Park.

Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn hung out Saturday at Studio Paris. Tampa Bay Rays coach Joe Maddon had dinner at Hugo's Frog Bar that night.

Five years ago, denim-on-denim defied all of the dire warnings in the "Undateable" handbook: Instead of evoking John Denver or Britney Spears in her misstyled youth, chambray shirts paired with darker blue jeans became as cool as actor Johnny Depp and street-style heroine Alexa Chung.
