Jackie Robinson T-shirts being offered for big bucks online

Limited edition Jackie Robinson West T-shirts hit online markets
Sporting goods store decries efforts to capitalize on Little League team's popularity

Those bright yellow T-shirts celebrating the success of the Jackie Robinson West Little League team are being sold on eBay — for up to triple the original price.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, which has helped raise money for the team since last year, shipped 7,000 shirts to its South Loop location, where they were quickly snapped up by fans of the young team. The store charged $20 for a shirt, promising all the proceeds would go directly toward helping the league.

But today, as Chicagoans flocked to a parade and rallies in honor of the team, some of those shirts have been advertised for up to $61 in the online marketplace.

According to the store's public relations firm, Dick's in the South Loop is the only commercial outlet that carried the official shirt. The last shipment was sent out Tuesday, with no plans to produce more, a representative said Wednesday.

When asked about those trying to take advantage of the team’s popularity by reselling shirts, Dick’s Sporting Goods issued a statement:

“While we are thrilled the T-shirts are so popular, the true spirit of them being available is to help rally the community and raise money that goes directly to the team. There is no assurance the money will go to the team when these products are purchased outside of this store.”
