When defensive lineman Fred Wyatt's name first came up in a staff meeting, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald chuckled. Fitzgerald first met Wyatt when he was barely old enough to carry a football.
In 1999, as a defensive graduate assistant at Colorado, Fitzgerald distributed pizza slices at a summer camp in Boulder. Wyatt nicknamed him "The Pizza Pizza Guy."
"I reminded him of that when he first came to campus, and he had no clue what I was talking about," Fitzgerald said. "We're really excited about Fred. He's a big, athletic guy, a very talented guy."
And he has intriguing bloodlines. Father Buddy Wyatt, who played at TCU, is the defensive line coach at Kansas under Charlie Weis. He worked under Gary Barnett at Northwestern in 1997-98.
"They've got Wildcat in their blood," Fitzgerald said. "It's neat to see this come full circle."
