Nearly running down the leaders, Lukas Verzbicas took sixth Sunday in the International Triathlon Union's World Cup event in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary.
Verzbicas finished the sprint-distance race (750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run) in 52 minutes, 21 seconds - just 11 seconds off the podium.
The event was the debut of a two-day format in which athletes raced Saturday to earn a spot in Sunday's final. Verzbicas was victorious in the first men's semifinal Saturday in 54:27 and was the lone U.S. entrant to advance.
In the final, Verzbicas exited the swim 39 seconds off the pace and went into the run just over a minute down. A 14:42 run split left him 28 seconds behind the overall winner.
Verzbicas, 19, of Palos Hills had won a full-distance World Cup event last month.Copyright © 2015, RedEye
