Montini's Sykes leaves Notre Dame, headed to Indiana

Former Montini linebacker Nile Sykes is leaving Notre Dame just weeks after setting foot on campus to attend Indiana, the Hoosiers announced Friday morning.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly released Sykes from his letter of intent and Sykes will be eligibile to play in the fall for Indiana, Hoosiers coach Kevin Wilson said in a statement.

In a similar situation, Kelly did not release defensive end Eddie Vanderdoes from his letter of intent after Vanderdoes, citing family concerns, expressed a desire to attend another school in 2013. Vanderdoes currently attends UCLA.

"After Coach Kelly and Notre Dame released Nile from his NLI, he reached out to us," Wilson said. "We recruited Nile hard and he was a guy we really wanted. We are happy to have him and welcome him into our program."

A source said Sykes's reason for leaving Notre Dame was to seek a better fit at another school.

Sykes, a three-star prospect according to 247sports.com's composite rankings, committed to Notre Dame in December and signed his letter of intent in February.
