The delayed registration for the Oct. 12 Bank of America Chicago Marathon began smoothly online at its rescheduled start of noon Wednesday.

Race officials said more than 17,000 people had successfully applied for race entry in the first four hours.  Of that number, 14,500 entered the non-guaranteed entry lottery.

No registration problems were reported.  A question on the popular message board of letsrun.com seeking information about any issues drew responses indicating the system was functioning well.

Registration was to have started March 5 but was postponed two weeks because of issues with the online registration system.

Last February, the online registration system for the 2013 race crashed within minutes of opening, ran intermittently for a while and was shut down by the embarrassing snafu about four hours later.  It was not operational again for two weeks.

Registration for the 45,000 spots available in the 2014 race remains open until April 12.
