For the first time, there are Illinois teams other than the Northwestern women in an NCAA lacrosse tournament.
Aurora University became the first men's team from Illinois to make the NCAAs. The third-year program earned one of the 29 spots in the Division III tournament when it beat Carthage 13-3 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference title game Saturday.
Augustana's women, a second-year program, also are in the 32-team Division III tourney for the first time after winning their MLC title game 10-9 over North Central.
Aurora (15-3), which has won 15 straight, opens Wednesday at Ohio Wesleyan (13-5). Aurora lost its season opener 11-9 at Ohio Wesleyan.
Augustana (16-3) plays at the University of Redlands Wednesday. Augustana lost its season opener at Redlands 18-6.
Naperville high school grads Max Obriecht (North) and Danny Loyall (Central), both sophomores, are Aurora’s top goal scorers. Obriecht had four goals in the title game, giving him 50 for the season, while Loyall has 42.
Sophomore Christina Letmanski of Glenbard West led Augustana in both goals (49) and assists (31).
