Though the Chicago Jazz Festival begins next Thursday, several preliminary events will serve as curtain-raisers:

Saxophonist Joseph Jarman and bassist Malachi Favors Maghostut will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Cassidy Theater of the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. Admission is free.

“Tenor Madness: Chicago Style” will feature tenor saxophonists Fred Anderson (above), Jarman and Edward Wilkerson Jr., with bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer Hamid Drake, 1 p.m. Sunday at the DuSable Museum of African-American History, 740 E. 56th Pl. Admission is $15-$20; phone 312-559-1212.

And the 1997 Jazz Club Tour will run from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, with stops at several local clubs, including the Jazz Showcase, at 59 W. Grand Ave. Admission to 12 clubs, including bus transportation, is $10; phone the Jazz Institute of Chicago at 312-427-1676.
