Chicago's canned beers of summer

Fresh canned brews for the holiday weekend and beyond

What can go places where glass can’t? Cans can. What can easily stack in your cooler, meaning double the good stuff? Cans can. What hoppy, malty beverage can enhance camping trips, beach days and all the outdoor summer adventures only made better with booze? Beer can. And speaking of “beer can,” more and more local breweries are opting for cans over bottles. Not only do they come in a delightful variety of sizes for any occasion—ranging from the standard 12-ounce to the colossal 32-ounce—but they also keep you happy by keeping the sun out of your beer.

Bottles aren’t a thing of the past, but as far as American Dreams are concerned, you can’t shotgun a bottle and crush it on your face quite in the same way you can a shiny aluminum pop-top. Gearing up for a weekend full of Independence Day festivities, don’t worry your American-flag-bandana-donning head with which beer to bring to the barbecue. Read on for 12 canned craft beer recommendations, most released in the last year—and a few oldies but goodies for good measure—from Chicago breweries, plus a few from the surrounding area.
