A Chicago man was arrested Sunday after he was accused of biting a Jewel-Osco store security guard while trying to flee the store without purchasing the two bottles of vodka tucked into his coat, county prosecutors said.

John Adkisson, 44, was arrested at the supermarket’s 3531 N. Broadway location, where he was spotted by a security guard removing the vodka from a shelf and trying to exit the store without paying, according to a police report.

The report said Adkisson, who did not appear in court because he is being treated for injuries in a hospital, tried to escape being caught first by biting the guard’s hand, then by trying to grab his testicles during a struggle involving him, the guard, and a store manager who came to the guard’s aid.

Police officers who arrived at the store searched Adkisson and found he had a pipe for smoking cannabis, the report said. He was charged with aggravated battery to a merchant and possession of a controlled substance.

Adkisson, of the 900 block of West Lawrence Avenue in Uptown, appeared at the Cook County Leighton Criminal Courthouse Wednesday afternoon and was ordered held on $100,000 bond, after initially being held without bail.
