“Where were you when … ?”

It’s a familiar start to a question that usually concludes with a memorable moment in history. Most often, the events that inspire this question come with little notice, whether it be a tragic happening or a surprise announcement of some national concern.

For Cubs fans, we have ample time to prepare our answer for the question we always hoped would come: Where were you when the Cubs won the World Series?

If it happens, this is a moment you’ll be reliving in your daydreams forever, a story you should never tire of telling, whether it’s to your kids, your grandkids or anyone who will listen. It’s a question worth your advance consideration. Even if there’s no wrong answer in the end, try to make sure you don’t mess it up too badly.

Mostly, just use common sense. Like, don’t be in the bathroom. If you can help it, don’t be stuck in the office working late. And maybe quit your job if your boss is making you work during Game 7 of the World Series.

If you’re in a relationship you know isn’t going anywhere, probably don’t watch with him or her. Also, maybe break up with that person. All common sense.

By no means am I saying you have to be at a bar or a party or something like that. Just understand that this has the potential to be one of the most unforgettable moments of your life, and try not to do something you don’t want to remember.

That said, do whatever the hell you want to do. Listen to the final out of the game on radio with your grandparents. Or watch it on the StairMaster. Sit naked on your Pringles-covered couch biting your nails and crying. If that’s your thing, go for it. Although maybe don’t tell your grandkids that one.

Even with all the planning in the world, there’s no guarantee this won’t blow up spectacularly. If you’re a Cubs fan, you’re almost programmed to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. But just this once, it’s worth preparing for the best—because it could end up being the best story you’ll ever tell.
