Perhaps it was only a matter of time before Elena Delle Donne became the most valuable player in the WNBA.

Athletes can’t think that way, of course, but given her increasingly impressive performances throughout her career, Delle Donne earned that very award Wednesday.

Already a two-time league All-Star and the 2013 Rookie of the Year, the third-year guard/forward led the league in scoring with 23.4 points per game. She averaged almost 3 points more than her closest competition, Minnesota forward Maya Moore (20.6). Delle Donne also was third in both rebounds (8.4) and blocks (2.06).

The defending Eastern Conference champion Sky open the postseason Thursday at UIC Pavilion with the first game of a best-of-three series against Indiana.
