Upon arriving at Perry’s, it became immediately apparent that Lolla had chosen the “Fancy” singer’s stage before the track became the song of summer. The EDM kids merged with the Top 40 kids, which later resulted in the most dangerous Lolla sidewalk traffic jam I’ve ever seen.

From the back of the field, Iggy did not sound good, and was completely invisible due to the lack of video screens. Ending her set 15 minutes early, she sounded sleepy and not the least bit like her recorded self (surprise) when blasting through her biggest hit. It’s not like I’m not still going to belt the track at my desk, though. -Dana Moran

I caught a little more than half of Iggy Azalea’s Friday afternoon set at Perry’s stage and enjoyed less than none of it. Look, I get it–her dumbed-down rap takes no effort to listen to, and especially during the summer that can be entertaining. She drew what was likely the largest-ever crowd for a daytime Lolla artist. Except how many people were there simply because of the spectacle? It would be a compliment to call Iggy a Nicki Minaj impersonator; ask Nicki to write 10 terrible songs on purpose, and they’d still be better than Iggy’s best.

You’d think the ubiquitous “Fancy” would have become a massive, field-wide sing-along, but it didn’t. Because many people (myself included) were there for the novelty and the social observation, not because it’s good. Again: I’m all for dumb fun. But the quality of the dumb can’t be so low that it gets in the way of the fun. -Matt Pais
