Work to ease Purple Line slow zones will begin next month, the city of Evanston announced this week.

The seven-month construction project will begin in south Evanston and continue north, according to Evanston officials. The CTA will replace more than 6,000 railroad ties in the first major upgrade to Purple Line ties since 1976.

About 36 percent of the Purple Line is under slow zone, during which trains travel 35 miles per hour or slower. Systemwide, about 15 percent of CTA track is under slow zone. The Purple Line saw about 10,000 weekday riders in February, the most current CTA ridership data available.

Evanston has posted a tentative timeline of the work, most of which will occur at night and on weekends. The CTA said Purple Line riders can expect “minor delays to service” during the project.
