Pimp your balcony

If you're lucky enough to have a sliver of outdoor space--whether it be a front stoop, balcony or rooftop landing--it's your duty to make the most of it. Before you max out your credit card at the nearest Home Depot, Tara Heibel, owner of Sprout Home, says there are four things you must do. First, measure your space: Will that patio set, grill and kegerator all fit? Second, come with inspiration: Decide what colors and prints you'd like to see in your space. Third, know your environment: Is your porch drenched in light or shade? Is it exposed to wind and water? You'll need to know if you want to buy plants. Last, know yourself: Figure out if you want a low- or high-maintenance space and set a budget. Armed with these four things, you'll be able to make better use of your time and money. Heibel recommends using your entire space: the walls, railings and overhead area. Whether you're hanging baskets of flowers from the ceiling or stringing lights on your railing, the possibilities are endless. -Morgan Olsen
