Hot dogs and potato chips are one of the happiest food marriages you’ll find in American culinary history. But hot dog-flavored potato chips? Now you’re talking crazy.

But Pringles decided to go there with their recent release of a flavor called Hot Diggity Dog. I got my hands on a can today and gave them a try.

Upon popping open the container, I was punched square in the nose with the aroma of mustard comingling with grease. No meaty smells here, just Chicago’s favorite condiment. That would prove to be the common thread laced throughout this particular chip experience. Sadly, the Hot Diggity Dog chips don’t resemble a hot dog in any way, shape or form. They’re essentially potato chips with a slight mustard stain and red flecks of unidentified seasoning if you look close enough (which I did because, hey, I take my job very seriously).

So, do they actually taste like hot dogs? Faintly. Very, very faintly, but not initially. They taste just like ordinary Pringles, a sort of sad, bland potato flavor. From there, the mustard takes over. As you continue to chew, you do notice a vaguely meaty taste on the back of your tongue that’s vaguely reminiscent of some long forgotten outdoor barbecue.

There’s not nearly enough hot dog flavor in this potato chip, something I never thought I’d find myself complaining about. If you’re going to make a mustard-flavored chip, call it Mustard, not Hot Diggity Dog.

Do these chips give the Hot Doug’s empire a run for its money? Absolutely not. Did they make me exclaim, “Hot Diggity Dog!” after eating them? Um, no. Are they an innocuous, perfectly A-OK snack food? Sure, why not. But if you’re really craving a hot dog, these chips come up limp.
