Ben McKenzie is trading crime-fighting duties in Los Angeles to clean up Gotham City.

The former “Southland” star has been cast in the lead role of Det. James Gordon in Fox’s upcoming drama “Gotham,” Warner Bros. announced Saturday in a press release.

Based on DC Comics characters, “Gotham” explores Gordon’s early career before he became Gotham City’s police commissioner and a big ally of Batman. According to the Warner Bros. release, the series also will explore the origins of many villains destined to become the Caped Crusader’s foes.

I guess we can expect to see young versions of the Riddler, Catwoman, the Joker and the Penguin. I wonder if pre-Batman Bruce Wayne might make an appearance?

Bruno Heller, the man behind CBS’ “The Mentalist” and HBO’s “Rome,” wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer. Danny Cannon, who has worked on CW’s “Nikita” and CBS’ “CSI” series, will direct and executive produce the pilot.

Warner Bros. Television and Fox are teaming up for the drama, which has a series commitment at the network. McKenzie has worked with Warner Bros. TV in “The O.C.” and “Southland.”
