A new temporary ice skating rink is expected to open Monday in Lakeview.

Skaters won’t have to pay an admission fee but will have to bring their own skates to try out the 20-foot-wide and 110-foot-long rectangular non-refrigerated ice rink set up in the parking lot of Barcocina at 2901 N. Sheffield Ave.

Weather permitting, the rink will be open to the public from 3-10 p.m. daily and skaters can get free hot chocolate from Barcocina in mugs provided by Be Realty, a primary sponsor of the rink, said Jeff Briggs, Director of Business Relations for Chicago View, a marketing organization for businesses in the city and producer of a magazine every other month.

The ice rink was a collective effort from the business community to do something for the neighborhood tied to the winter season and make good use of the space, he said.

“It sounds like a win for everyone and the community and businesses to get exposure,” Briggs said.

However, above-freezing temperatures earlier this winter haven’t helped projects like these.

“We had some difficulty with Mother Nature. It’s probably the only time you wish for it to be so cold,” Briggs said.

The plan is to keep the ice rink up through at least Valentine’s Day, he said.

On Sunday, a skating rink will open in Wicker Park’s namesake park on Damen. Like the Lakeview rink, the community kicked in funds to build it.
