I haven’t had a chance to write full reviews of DirecTV Audience Network’s big Wednesday premiere night, but here are some quick reviews that hopefully will get you to watch. “Damages” proves once again why it is one of the smartest thrillers on TV, and the new “Hit & Miss” offers a promising opening episode.
The twisty legal thriller “Damages” (8 p.m. July 11, DirecTV Audience; 4 stars) sets up a helluva final season with an intense opening episode. Cutthroat attorney Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) orchestrates a final showdown with her protege, Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), in not one but two cases. First, Ellen plans to testify against Patty her a custody hearing for Patty’s granddaughter. The bigger case involves the ringleader (Ryan Phillippe) of a WikiLeaks-style website. Ellen thinks she’s figured out how to one-up Patty, but no one is smarter, more cunning or more ruthless than Miss Hewes.
In “Hit & Miss” (9 p.m. Wednesday, DirecTV Audience; 3 stars), Chloe Sevigny dons an Irish accent and a prosthetic penis to play contract killer and male-to-female transsexual Mia, who discovers that she has inherited her deceased former lover’s four children. I’ve seen just one episode that hints the series, from Paul Abbott, creator of the British “Shameless” and “State of Play,” will move at its own pace. But it’s an incredibly poignant look at Mia and her new family, and Sevigny is outstanding.
