Starz has shared the first photos from and a trailer for the upcoming second season of its adventure series “Da Vinci’s Demons,” which will air in Spring 2014.

And yes, Leonardo still hasn’t buttoned up his shirt front. The series, from David S. Goyer, follows the “untold” (er, fictional–but fun) adventures of Leonardo da Vinci as he was becoming the elder inventor, scientist, painter and innovator—the Renaissance man—people recognize him as historically. Tom Riley plays Leonardo.

In Season 2, Starz says, Florence is “thrown into chaos in the wake of the Pazzi conspiracy. Lorenzo is gravely ill and Leonardo da Vinci must push the limits of his mind and body to defend the city against the forces of Rome.

“While the Medicis go to unthinkable lengths to deal with new threats, da Vinci continues on his quest to find the fabled Book of Leaves and uncover the secret history of his mother. He’ll come to realize that he has lethal competition in his quest—new enemies who may be even worse than the forces of Pope Sixtus.

“His search will take him to faraway lands and force him to reevaluate everything he knew about the world and his own history.”

Apparently that search leads him to South America. One of the photos in the gallery above suggests Leonardo and Count Orisini (Blake Ritson) are in an Incan tomb. And in the new trailer released this afternoon at New York Comic-Con, we see Da Vinci and his pals sail to what presumably is South America.

The series also stars Laura Haddock as Lucrezia Donati, Elliot Cowan as Lorenzo Medici and Lara Pulver as Clarice Orsini.
