The CTA said Tuesday it will spend up to $525,000 for art at seven North Side Red Line stations undergoing rehabilitation.
The CTA is soliciting submissions from artists to determine who will create artwork that will hang at the Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, Thorndale, Granville, Morse and Jarvis stops. Installations are expected to occur in September 2013.
The budget for each station will be between $45,000 and $99,000, the CTA said Tuesday at a public meeting at the Broadway Armory in Edgewater. The project is being paid for with federal funds, the CTA said.
Submissions from artists are due Oct. 10. After the deadline, a CTA committee will review the applications and select 25 artists to submit proposals. These artists each will receive $500.
The CTA will review the proposals and choose seven artists to create the art for the seven stations. The agency will pay a stipend to each artist. The stipend is typically 20 percent of the project cost, said project coordinator Elizabeth Kelley.
Earlier this year, the CTA started rehabbing seven of the most disgusting northern Red Line stations. The agency is painting walls, replacing floors and improving lighting. Work is expected to be done later this year.
