Chicago’s ‘Sarah Marshall’ is still single

Four months after actor Jason Segel launched Amy Bergseth to internet stardom, the subject of the most famous brick in all of Wrigleyville remains “still single.”

Which begs the question–given the fact that the Cubs are going to be awful for the forseeable future, who is going to get a ring first–Bergseth or her beloved Cubbies?

“In the near future, I would say the Cubs,” Bergseth said. “I think the new management they put in place is huge and I would not be surprised if it happened in the next five years. I don’t know that I’m moving in that direction.”

Bergseth has a personalized brick at Wrigley Field that sits lost amid the sea of tributes to Cubs fans both new and old about thirty paces in front of the right edge of the marquee. Its inscription, “Still Single Because Of You Amy Bergseth,” is perhaps more Wrigleyville than all of the other bricks put together, an ode to all the good times and broken hearts that have happened at the corner of Clark and Addison where it sits.

Bergseth’s father bought her the brick several years ago after a lighthearted discussion about her personal life and the Cubs’ adverse impact on it.

“We had been joking about how I should get one that said something along the lines of ‘It’s your fault I’m still single (referring to Wrigley)’,” Bergseth said. “Then he really did it. He has quite the sense of humor.”

When Segel saw it in January 2012, he was reminded of his seminal movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” so he tweeted a picture to his million plus followers, resulting in a swarm of attention the soft-spoken blonde, whose friends now refer to as “brick girl,” wasn’t necessarily prepared for.

Now, she counts herself among the 95 accounts that “Muppets” star follows.

“He sent me a direct message on Twitter saying ‘Hey bud, sorry I opened kind of a can of worms for you. Hope you’re okay with it,'” she said.

That “can of worms” has resulted in her Twitter following (@amybergseth) more than doubling in size. She’ll hear from fans of Segel’s every now and again who will follow her specifically because he does.
Bergseth, a rabid Cubs fan who attends about 20 games per year, says that while she’s become more popular on social media these days, she hasn’t gotten any dates because of her brick just yet.

“My friends have gotten a big kick out of it,” she said laughing. “They’ve started calling me ‘Still Single.’ They’re very amused.”

Bergseth and the fictional Sarah Marshall do have a lot more in common besides the connection to Segel though. Both are blonde, slim and attractive. Like Marshall, Bergseth is also quite successful in her career as well, though she’s not a movie star–she’s a business analyst out in Glencoe.

“She (Marshall) kind of jumped from one serious relationship to the next and I don’t normally do that,” Bergseth said.

So what would it take for her to give up her status as a bachelorette?

Bergseth said a potential romantic interest has to be easy-going, attractive, and willing to tolerate her antics. But much like Cubs fans and the World Series, she’s not holding her breath waiting around for Mr. Right.

“If (a relationship) is something that happens and it makes my life better, so be it,” she said matter-of-factly. “I’m open to anything but it’s not a big goal of mine. I don’t think it’s this pinnacle that I’ve been striving for.”
