Chicago Lawn last week logged its third homicide of the month and 14th homicide of the year, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data.

A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot July 23 in the 2400 block of West 68th Street, police said.

Chicago Lawn has recorded the second highest homicide toll so far this year among Chicago’s 77 community areas, RedEye determined. Austin, Chicago’s largest community area, has logged the most homicides: 24 killings.

The Southwest Side community area recorded nine homicides last year, down from 22 homicides in 2012, according to RedEye data.

Citywide, gunshot homicides were logged in the last week in East Garfield Park, the Near West Side and West Pullman, according to police information.

Thirty-eight homicides have been recorded so far this month. Fifty-three homicides were logged in July 2013, RedEye determined.
