When Mayor Emanuel officially re-opened the rehabilitated Grand Red Line station last year, he announced plans to begin overhauling a Red Line station, building a new Green Line station and consolidating two stations in the Loop into a superstation within 15 months.
Only one of those projects has started.
Construction was supposed to begin this month on the Loop station, a merging of the century-old Randolph/Wabash and Madison/Wabash stations, but won't begin until mid-2014, said Pete Scales, a Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman.
The Washington/Wabash Loop station, estimated last year to cost $75 million, was supposed to be complete by September 2014. The new open date is late 2015, Scales said.
Scales said the timeline changed because additional environmental studies were required for the Loop project, which will include elevators to make the station accessible for riders with disabilities.
"We didn't anticipate these other requirements from the [Federal Transit Administration] but we're getting it done," Scales said. The project is in the design phase, and CDOT anticipates soliciting construction bids by the end of the year.
The Loop superstation has been long in the works. A 1998 Tribune article describes plans for a consolidated station with entrances on Wabash Avenue and Randolph and Washington Streets.
On the Green Line, construction was forecasted in early 2012 to begin in February 2013 for the new $50 million Cermak station between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stops. Work will begin in about a month-and-a-half, Scales said.
Meanwhile, work continues on the overhaul of the Clark/Division Red Line station. The project, which will include a new mezzanine at LaSalle Street, is scheduled to be complete in 2015.
