Dear RedEye “Bus Tracker” app,

We’ve been through a lot since 2012. I remember how excited I was the first time we met. You were everything I had been looking for in an app. You were my daily news fix, my CTA tracker, my after-work drinks guide, and my wingman. Basically, you were my everything. You were there for me during my crappy commutes, chance meetings, walks of shame (a.k.a. strides of pride) and late-night food runs. I’ll always be thankful for that.

But lately things have been different.

You haven’t taken care of yourself over the years. You’re still the same app as the day you launched, and I don’t mean that in a good way. When was the last time you had a product update or a new feature? Talk about lack of self-improvement. You’ve been slow, buggy and I swear if I’m late to work because of your bus tracker one more time I will lose my shit. That Taxi Catcher feature was nice for a while, but have you heard of Uber? It’s kind of a thing now. Plus, you haven’t had a decent Missed Connection since Halloween of 2013. What kind of wingman are you, anyway?

What I’m trying to say is … it’s over. I’m moving on. And it’s not me, it’s you.

I know what you’re probably thinking, and you’re right- there is someone else. Well, something. This one is special. It’s clean and readable and easy to use and I know you would love it if circumstances were different. Yeah, yeah, so it doesn’t include a CTA tracker or some of your old bells and whistles, but there are other apps for that now, including one coming from the CTA. Let’s get those ETAs straight from the source.

The new RedEye Mobile App is exactly what I need in my life right now. It’s so connected to the city and always knows where the cool new spots are. It just helps me stay connected to Chicago so I never feel like I’m missing out. The new app does this amazing little thing where it gives me breaking news alerts, but the kind of alerts I actually care about- like when President Obama is in town and LSD is shut down (thanks, Obama) or when Baconfest tickets go on sale. And it lets me customize what I want to see in the app. You never listened to me when I said I wanted to be more independent, but the new app did. I can finally hide all the crap I don’t want to read and focus on the important things (okay so maybe it’s all celebrity gossip … no shame here). Plus, it lets me save stories so I can read them later in case I don’t have time, or want to read them when I don’t have service in the tunnel on the Red line.

I guess I’m just ready to move on to something that fits my lifestyle a little better. You were great back in the day, and I’ll always remember the good times, but now I’m ready for an upgrade. Hope you can understand and don’t take it too hard.

XOXO
