Starz had a busy day Friday at New York Comic-Con, unveiling a new trailer for the upcoming pirate drama “Black Sails” as well as presenting footage for Season 2 of “Da Vinci’s Demons.” (See that in a separate story here.)

“Black Sails,” from executive producer Michael Bay, will premiere in January 2014.

The eight-episode first season follows Captain Flint and his men 20 years before the events in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale “Treasure Island.” Toby Stephens plays Capt. John Flint, who adds fast-talking John Silver (Luke Arnold) to his crew. Pirates, forever on the run, find a haven on New Providence Island, a notorious paradise for pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers.

Zack McGowan, who has spent time in Chicago while playing Jody in Showtime’s “Shameless,” stars as Capt. Charles Vane, a rival pirate captain of Flint’s. Tom Hopper plays as Billy Bones, first mate of Flint’s ship, The Walrus.

Other co-stars include Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie, a beautiful and determined woman who runs the smuggling operation on New Providence; Jessica Parker Kennedy (“The Secret Circle”) as Max, a tortured young prostitute who sees the dark side of New Providence, and Clara Paget plays the beautiful but cold-blooded Anne Bonny.

“Black Sails” was created by Jon Steinberg (“Jericho”) and Robert Levine (“Touch”) and is exec produced by Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. It filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.
