After I watched another comeback victory for the Bears on Monday, I went to sleep and had a football dream. And in this dream, the Bears were good. Really good. I’m talking about scoring 50 points with four-touchdown games by Cutler and a defense that post shutouts week in and week out. But I knew it wasn’t real.
Because in reality, the Bears have underachieved and have failed to give Chicago the winner it deserves for a long time, and many of my feelings toward the team come from years of disappointment. The franchise seems committed to making a change, but we won’t be satisfied until the Bears are champs again.
So I offer to you this poem on these feelings. Hopefully it will shed some light on the angst of fans such as myself.
Back in the days we used to cheer for Walter.
We thought Ditka was a savior
And he walked on water.
They danced in ’85,
Showboated and jived.
But they couldn’t keep Ryan,
And the dynasty died.
Wannstedt would follow,
And he couldn’t get it done.
So in came Jauron,
But it was more of the same,
Much like his personality, LAME.
So who would be next
To answer the call?
A guy named Lovie
We never heard of at all.
He had a system
A design and a plan
That worked great for a minute
Because Urlacher was the man.
In ’06 they prospered,
But lost the big game
And could never quite capture
The magic again.
They traded for Jay
When they had the chance,
But it hasn’t worked out,
Like a bad romance.
We broke up with Lovie
And his Cover 2 scheme,
Which couldn’t be copied
By the Trestman regime.
Things got bad quickly
So Marc had to go!
And now we turn to Fox
For a brand-new show.
Will it be good?
It’s too soon to tell.
All I know is losing stinks,
And that’s all we have … oh well!
So here we are in Week 10. The Bears are 3-5 and looking for another win as they get set to take on St. Louis. The Rams feature a strong defensive unit along with a rookie sensation at running back in Todd Gurley. They also just added former all-pro receiver Wes Welker, whom they signed earlier this week.
This game has the makings of another nail-biter. So it’s imperative for the Bears to limit mistakes on offense.
Receiver Alshon Jeffery has been outstanding as the No. 1 target since his return. He will only get better as long as he stays away from injury. Rookie running back Jeremy Langford had a big game in San Diego; he’ll be looking for a repeat performance with veteran Matt Forte likely out another week.
Defensively, players need to continue to step up. Defensive end/outside linebacker Lamarr Houston may have earned more playing time, seeing as his two sacks against the Chargers helped put the game away for the Bears.
