Bryzzo to the rescue in Game 2.
All it took was Anthony Rizzo driving in Kris Bryant in the top of the first Wednesday, giving the Cubs their first World Series run in 71 years. The rest of the Cubs’ bats caught fire from there, and four hours later, they had beaten Cleveland 5-1 to tie the World Series at a game apiece.
See, no need to panic.
Game 3 is Friday night at Wrigley Field (7:08 p.m., Fox). Word of advice: Get to Wrigleyville SUPER early if you plan to get a seat anywhere.
3 UP
American League rules rock
He doesn’t have a “Schwarbomb” yet (though he came awfully close in Game 1). What Kyle Schwarber does have are a pair of RBI singles he picked up Wednesday, one in the third inning and another in the fifth. The only bad news: He’ll likely be relegated to pinch hitting in Games 3, 4 and 5 in this series because team doctors haven’t cleared him to play defense. Darn.
“You just try to put yourself in the best possible position in every at-bat and just go from there,” Schwarber told Fox after the game.
Coming up aces
The Cubs see Cleveland’s Corey Kluber and raise them one Jake Arrieta. The reigning NL Cy Young winner was superb Wednesday, surrendering only one run on two hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out six. Not hideous in the least. Bonus points for pitching so well wearing short sleeves in 43-degree weather.
Let’s hope it’s contagious
Whatever Ben Zobrist is eating/drinking/wearing as a good luck charm is working. After going 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored Wednesday, he’s now hitting .625 in the World Series. That is not a typo.
Bonus: That guy who trolled Trevor Bauer
Huge props to Jason Mollett, who sent the Indians’ Game 2 starter a mini-drone. Bauer infamously hurt himself playing with a drone earlier this month, causing a pretty disgusting bleeding incident on the mound during in the ALCS. It’s as cold-blooded as it is hilarious.
3 DOWN
Quiet, Joe!
By the end of the fifth inning, Cleveland hitters had only reached base via bases on balls. As the Fox broadcast went to break, the sound cut out slightly as play-by-play announcer Joe Buck said Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta was no-[blanking] the Indians. Crisis averted momentarily. But then Buck mentioned it several more times in the top of the sixth … until Jason Kipnis finally doubled with one out in the sixth to break up the no-hit bid. Thanks a lot, Joe.
Believeland? #NoThanks
Cubs fans have spoken. As much as they disliked the San Francisco Giants’ favored hashtag (#BeliEVEN, in case you forgot), they dislike the Indians’ #Believeland even more. Of course, it could just be a matter of timing. Maybe we’ll declare it a tie.
Getting tired? Too cold?
Oh. No. Several of Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman’s fastballs registered at only 99 mph on Fox’s radar gun on Wednesday. How will he ever get batters out now.
OK, we’ll stop. Can’t wait for Friday (that part wasn’t sarcasm whatsoever).
