Sen. John McCain may withdraw endorsement for Richard Mourdock

Just one week after campaigning for U.S. Senatorial candidate Richard Mourdock, Senator John McCain may be withdrawing his endorsement.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, McCain said his decision to keep his endorsement "depends on what (Mourdock) does."

During Tuesday night’s debate in New Albany, Mourdock fielded a question about abortion, saying he opposes abortion in cases of rape and incest “even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something that God intended."

He clarified his comments following the debate, but it didn’t stop critics from weighing in. Mourdock countered that his remarks were misinterpreted.

McCain is yet another Republican asking for the candidate to apologize for the controversial comments. Presidential nominee Mitt Romney and gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence asked Mourdock to apologize Wednesday morning.

"I've made a few mistakes.. and I've asked for people's understanding and forgiveness when I own up to it," said McCain. "It's when you don't own up to it that people won't believe in you."

Mourdock continues to stick by his original comments.

“If it was because of a lack of clarity in my words, I truly regret it,” he said during a press conference Wednesday. “So many people mistook, twisted, (and) came to misunderstand the points that I was trying to make.”
