Joseph Vernell of Proviso East set a state record of 10.25 seconds in the 100-meter dash Thursday.

Vernell, a 5-foot-8-inch, 155-pound junior, sped the distance in a triangular meet at Evanston that also included North Chicago. He erased the old mark of 10.3 set by Albert Robinson of Hales Franciscan in 1982 and tied by Kelly Reed of Kenwood in 1983.

”I think he has perfect sprinter`s form,” said Proviso East coach Chuck Farinella. ”His thighs are huge. That gives you the power, and that`s what he has. He is fantastic out of the blocks. And another good thing about him is that I`ll have him another year.”

Vernell also won the 200-meter dash in 21.3 seconds. That tied for the sixth best time in the event in Illinois, behind the record of 20.89 by Wallace Spearmon of Blue Island Eisenhower (1981).
