Holiday pet dangers

Keep a close eye on man's best friend over the holidays. He will try to sneak a piece of your candy on Halloween and steal a sliver of turkey off your plate at Thanksgiving. All that will leave Fido feeling sick.

"We treat pets that have eaten a box of candy left on the coffee table, the turkey carcass from the garbage, hot dogs from a football game party and tinsel from the tree," June LaFave, veterinarian and medical director of Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center in Roscoe Village said in a news release. "These items can do more than cause stomach upset, they can lead to poisoning, pancreatitis, surgery, or even death."

If owners think their pets have ingested any inappropriate item, contact the vet immediately. The center points out the top 10 holiday dangers for pets. (Leonor Vivanco/RedEye)
