The Portage Park Theater, located at 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., is at risk of being replaced with a church. Community organizers hope to bring attention to this by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the most people wearing sunglasses in the dark.
During the BBQ Street Festival this Father's Day weekend, organizer Bob Brobson hopes to create some family fun with this event by gathering people (and their sunglasses) inside of the Portage Theater in attempt to break the record.
"The Portage Park Theater is a local economic engine and a public venue for the community," Brobson said. "I thought this would be a good way to draw attention to our campaign and save the theater."
The current record is estimated to be 674 and is held in Chicago. Brobson said he hopes to keep the title in the city, but has a goal of 1300 people.
Singer/songwriter Corey Hart, who sung the 1983 hit, "Sunglasses at Night", has extended his help with a video-taped message/performance that will serve as an introduction to the event.
The event is free and accessed through the main gate of the BBQ festival. Seats are limited.
