With a song list that includes such parody ditties as "Whine, Whine, Twang, Twang," "Stock Car Hair" and "Barefoot and Pregnant," "The Doyle & Debbie Show" imagines a concert created by a washed-up country duo, performing "all their top hits to the very best of their ability." The show was created by Bruce Arntson, who also performs the piece in the role of an old-guard star with numerous ex-wives and former hits; he’s joined by Jenny Littleton (playing a single, singing mother with three children) and Matt Carlton.
"The Doyle & Debbie Show," which uses an original score, has been playing in music venues in Nashville since 2006, with various one-night forays elsewhere. Arntson, a Nashville writer and musician for 30 years, said that while the tone is satirical, the music is lovingly crafted. He also said that a variety of country stars have been to the show and embraced its humor.
"I wrote this as a piece of musical theater with a narrative arc," said Arnston. "Chicago is our theatrical coming out party. We’ll dress the room. And if it works, we’ll put up shop for a while."
