The city's Department of Streets and Sanitation removed several unauthorized—and in at least one case, profane—street signs attached to light poles in Wicker Park on Tuesday morning.

The street signs, one of which reads “FUCK IT” with two directional arrows, turned up earlier in the day on Milwaukee Avenue, according to Daniella Linzer, who works in the area. Linzer snapped a photo of the sign, which was posted on a pole between North Avenue and Honore Street on Milwaukee Avenue. Her husband posted the photo on the Chicago sub-Reddit.

By noon, city crews had taken down three signs, said Molly Poppe, a spokeswoman for Streets and Sanitation. The agency first became aware of the sign after an inquiry from RedEye. She called the profanity in the sign pictured in the Reddit post “particularly egregious.”  Because it is not an official city sign, posting it on the utility poll is a violation of city law, she said.

If caught, offenders could face a fine for posting such signs.

Linzer said in an email that she saw two people this morning wearing T-shirts that read “reconstruction” on the back, using a small ladder to install three to four other signs on Milwaukee Avenue. She said another read “wonder, wander” with what looked like a man carrying a sack.
