U. of C.'s fashion magazine makes Teen Vogue list

MODA, University of Chicago's student-run fashion magazine -- yes, you read that right, University of Chicago has a fashion magazine -- isn't just any college fashion magazine. According to a recent Teen Vogue list, the university's 10-year-old fashion publication is actually one of the best college fashion magazines in the country.

In a list published last week comparing fashion magazines from schools like New York University, Columbia University, University of California-Berkeley and even nearby Northwestern University, Teen Vogue said that MODA's ability to mix shorter trend pieces with longer profiles that "capture the university's cerebral 'life of the mind' ethos'" is part of what makes the magazine stand apart from other college fashion publications.

MODA is part of a student organization at UChicago founded in 2003 that also includes a design program, trunk shows, a blog and an annual campus fashion show.

The magazine's editor-in-chief, 19-year-old sophomore Alexandra McInnis, said that at MODA, she and her staff of about 25 students believe fashion is not just about clothing, it's about ideas.

"UChicago is historically a huge powerhouse in terms of generating ideas, and our connection to the university really does affect the way we approach fashion," said McInnis, who hopes to use the magazine to overturn a stigma that fashion isn't a serious intellectual pursuit.

"We're trying to promote fashion as a worthy subcategory of the general fine arts world," she said. "I think fashion has the potential to do great at UChicago. We have people here who are very intelligent, very enthusiastic, and they're used to approaching issues from a lot of different perspectives. So I think fashion can really thrive here."

MODA can be read at modachicago.com or in print issues published three times a year, in line with University of Chicago's quarter system. The last print issue of the year will be available in the next few weeks.

The best performances of Lolla 2015

We saw a lot of great shows this weekend, but these were the best of the best. It’s gotta be Paul McCartney for me. The man is a legend and seriously an amazing performer who knows how to give the people what they want. Lolla wasn’t the first time I’ve seen Paul, and I really hope it won’t be my...

Lolla day 3: Best and worst, plus superlatives

Somehow, Lolla’s all over already. This is what we loved and didn’t enjoy quite as much from day 3. Best: I gotta give it to Florence and the Machine. Seems like an obvious choice, but she was just so fun and engaged with the crowd (and the storms). Even her songs I wasn’t familiar with were exciting...

Under Clubber: Porn and Chicken Monday

We only have one pair of shoes—dancing shoes—which means they certainly aren’t reserved for weekends only. Said shoes sent us questing after places to boogie down every night of the work week (after all, one person’s Monday is another’s Saturday). What we found were five parties, recurring Sunday...
