If you get an email claiming to be from the office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, take a closer look.

In a statement Tuesday, Madigan warned of scam emails using her office's name and an official-looking seal.

The emails include "final warning" letters indicating the recipient is overdue on a debt and will be prosecuted if payment is not made, according to the statement.

“This email is an outright scam,” Madigan said in the statement. “Do not respond to anyone claiming to represent my office with demands for money or threatening prosecution."

Illinois residents who suspect fraud can call the Consumer Fraud Bureau at 1-800-243-0618.
