A report by real-estate website Trulia has ranked Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood as one of the top 10 gayest neighborhoods in America.
By identifying zip codes with high-concentrations of gay and lesbian couples (using Census data) and examining the average price-per-foot of real estate in that area, the report found the top 10 neighborhoods that were the most affordable for gay and lesbian people.
In Edgewater, a home is averaged at $131 per square foot, making it the most affordable for gay and lesbian couples.
Alderman Harry Osterman, who represents the 48th ward, calls the acknowledgement "very exciting" and said it reflects the way people in the Edgewater community feel about their gay and lesbian neighbors.
"Edgewater is diverse on many levels and the gay and lesbians that live in our community have always made it a much better place to live," he said. "We have many LGBT small-business owners including Women & Children First bookstore and Big Chicks.
"We live in a very special place. Going back many years our community has always been supportive and welcoming to the LGBT community and immigrants. We hope to continue that in the future."
Other city neighborhoods included on the list were Atlanta, San Francisco and New York.
