Easter lilies highly poisonous to cats, vets warn

Easter Sunday lands on April 20 this year, so it's a good idea your cat doesn't get the munchies.

Easter lilies, a potted staple of the holiday, are highly poisonous to cats, the Chicago Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center warned days ahead of Easter. The group released an infographic Tuesday outlining the danger to felines, warning that ingestion could cause death.

The group says all types of lilies -- Easter, Asiatic, tiger and day -- can cause kidney damage to cats who eat them, which can lead to death. All parts of the plant, including the water it is stored in, can cause health problems to cats if ingested.

Common symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite and dehydration. Some rare symptoms can also cause tremors and seizures. Signs of poisoning will occur within 6 to 12 hours, and treatment within the first 18 hours is "critical" to saving the cats life, the group says. Owners who think their cat may have been exposed should see a vet immediately, and treatment ranges from inducing vomiting, intravenous therapy and kidney tests.
