Bars and Chicago history go hand in hand.
That's probably what makes the Chicago History Museum's tour of Chicago's Greatest Dive Bars such a success.
Described as the perfect education and social cocktail, Chicagoans and tourists who take the tour--the first of which is Friday--will learn about history, meet other like-minded folks and enjoy a drink--or two.
The tour heads to some of the city's dive bars, where attendees will learn the history behind moonshine, bathtub gin and other historic homemade drinks.
Liza Garibay, programs manager at the museum, said the idea was inspired after collecting historical data on bars in Chicago over the years. She has been giving the tours since 2007.
"It's been so well received," she said. "It's a great mix of ages, genders and ethnicities. Everyone is curious about history, and now it as become the most popular thing we offer at the museum."
Friday's event is sold out. However, tickets are still available for the Aug. 10 tour.
Other events are scheduled for Aug. 23, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7.
The cost is $30 for general admission and $25 for members.
