Running through O’Hare to catch a flight? Normal. Running 10K on the tarmac? Not so much.
The O’Hare 5K/10K On The Runway returns Sunday, Sept. 29, benefitting the Wounded Warriors Fund, the nonprofit organization that raises money for severely injured military vets. Yes, you really get to race on the runway.
5K and 10K races will be timed with the fastest overall male and female finisher in each receiving two domestic round-trip tickets from United Airlines, one of the race’s sponsors along with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Department of Aviation.
For the less competitive runners who still want to join in on the fun, there’s a 5K fun run/walk as well as the Take-Off Trot Kids’ Dash for children ages 4 to 10.
Online registration closes Friday and is $35 for the 5K fun run/walk, $40 for the 5K timed run and $45 for the 10k race. Interested runners can sign up after the online deadline at any of the three packet pickup locations. The kids’ dash is $25.
Packets can be picked up Sept. 22 at Sports Authority in Schaumburg, Sept. 24 at the Chicago Department of Aviation or Sept. 28 at Sports Authority at 3134 N. Clark St. Registration at pick-up is $35 for the fun run/walk, $40 for the timed 5K and $45 for 10K.
The 10K race begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 29 with 5K runs starting at 8:15 a.m. A community day will take place at the United Airlines Cargo Facility after the race with family-friendly activities, food and drinks from O’Hare restaurants and photo ops in front of a United plane.
This just might be the most fun you’ve ever had at O’Hare.
